HSA Eligible Health Plans

(HDHPs)

In able to be eligible to deposit money into a HSA, you must have a qualified High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP).  These health insurance plans can be a HMO, PPO, or POS.  What defines a qualified high deductible plan are:

  • Deductible size - For 2015 deductibles must be at least $1,300 for individuals and $2,600 for families.
  • It must be an aggregate deductible - This means that there is one deductible for everyone covered under the plan and each person's medical expenses contribute to this one deductible.
  • No first dollar coverage except for prevention and maintenance - With a HDHP you pay 100% of eligible expenses until the deductible is met including office visits and prescription drugs.  Exceptions to this may include prevention such as an annual physical and maintenance treatments such as some drugs.
